Kollmorgen AKD fault codes: what the drive display is telling you

Before you replace an AKD drive, read the display. A Kollmorgen AKD shows a two-part code on its front seven-segment display: the left character shows F for a fault or n for a warning, and the right character sequences the fault number (for example 1-0-1 for F101). The highest-priority active fault is shown, but several can be present at once, so the full list is read through Kollmorgen WorkBench software or the DRV.FAULTS command over the controller or HMI. Most faults can be cleared with the Disable & Clear Faults button once the cause is fixed, without a power cycle.

Knowing whether a fault points to the drive, the motor, the feedback device or the mains supply tells you what to order. These are among the AKD codes we are most often asked about when a customer is deciding between a repair, a reconditioned unit or a replacement:

• F245 External fault is triggered by an external input rather than the drive itself; clear the input condition to clear the fault.
• F302 Over speed means the motor exceeded the VL.THRESH velocity threshold; often a tuning or command-scaling issue, not a hardware failure.
• F303 Motor foldback means the drive is limiting current to protect the motor, which can indicate an undersized motor, a mechanical jam or a sizing mismatch.
• F501 Bus over voltage means DC bus voltage too high, frequently a regen (braking) circuit or resistor problem rather than the drive.
• F519/F521 Regen faults means a regen resistor short or overload; check the braking resistor before condemning the drive.
• F537 Precharge fault means the DC bus failed to pre-charge, which can signal an internal power-stage problem.
• F570 Phase loss means a mains phase is missing; check incoming supply and wiring first.
• F602 Safe torque off (STO) means the STO safety input is not enabled; restore the STO signal when safe to do so.
